Abu Dhabi: Sawab Centre, a joint initiative by the UAE and the US to counter the online propaganda of Daesh, has launched a page on Facebook to step up its efforts to combat the dissemination of online extremism.

Sawab’s Facebook page, once it was open, got 36,000 likes. This success comes in the wake of the overwhelming support the centre has received from its followers on other social media forums, such as Twitter and Instagram.

The centre has since its establishment served as a platform to combat Daesh online propaganda and recruitment by encouraging users of social media site Twitter to report content and users spreading Daesh propaganda. It encourages individuals and groups to maintain a vigilant eye and actively engage in online efforts to thwart Daesh’s attempts to promote its destructive ideology and recruit young people.

The centre aims to combat Daesh’s social media presence, counteracting its message with its own message of tolerance and, according to its mission statement, “amplify those many moderate voices that too often get drowned out by the noise of the extremists”.

Sawab, an indication of the UAE’s commitment to the international community to seriously combat terrorism, contributes to reclaiming online space from the extremists, fighting their propaganda and drying up their resources.
