Dubai: The Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award has announced the winners of its third edition’s special awards titled ‘Creating the Future’.

The winners will be honoured at a special ceremony at the Dubai International Financial Centre on March 17.

Internationally acclaimed American photojournalist Steve McCurry won the Photography Appreciation Award in recognition of his 30-year career. McCurry has held many photo exhibitions across the world and his iconic images and pictures have been featured worldwide in magazines and newspapers as well as book covers.

Australian Ren Ng won the Photographic Research-Report Award in recognition of his successful science-based research connected with imaging. Ren Ng earned a PhD in computer science from Stanford University and his doctoral thesis titled Digital Light Field Photography.

Ali Bin Thalith, Secretary-General of the award, said that McCurry deserves to win the appreciation award for his rich contributions to photography as well as for his devotion to his career, which focused on human consequences of wars as he covered armed conflicts in Afghanistan. McCurry continued to cover armed conflicts, including the Iran-Iraq War, Lebanon civil war, the Cambodian civil war, the Islamic insurgency in the Philippines, the Gulf War and the Afghan civil war.

Bin Thalith said that Ren Ng has been awarded for his rich contributions to scientific research in the field of digital cameras. He is also the executive chairman of Lytro, a company he established.
