The local organising committee for the 2015 Dubai World Air Games (WAG) has assured the international fraternity on its readiness to host the sport’s biggest competition at Skydive Dubai later this year.

A panel from Dubai led by Yousuf Al Hammadi, Championship Director, 2015 Dubai WAG was joined by Majid Al Bastaki and Ahmad Al Marzouqi from the Media Committee and Salem Akram from the PRO Committee for a presentation during the 109th WAG Congress held in Rotterdam, Holland recently.

The WAG Congress commenced with a minute’s silence for the late Shaikh Rashid Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who passed away after a heart attack last month.

Al Hammadi made a presentation on the various venues at Skydive Dubai and other areas that have been earmarked as drop zones for the WAG 2015 that will be held in 28 categories from December 1 to 12.

After attending the Congress, the panel travelled to Barcelona for a road show where the competition torch was lit and ceremoniously paraded through the town centre. Later Skydive Dubai’s Mike Howard piloted a hot air balloon with the torch to further promote WAG 2015. Earlier this summer, the WAG 2015 had kicked off their international promotional campaign with a similar road show and press conference in Lausanne, Switzerland.

“We are on target for a very successful organization of the World Air Games,” Al Hammadi told Gulf News on his return.

“Dubai is considered the capital of aero sports all over the world due to our ability to stage some of the best sporting events here. This is due to the excellent facilities we have at Skydive Dubai and the great vision shown by our leaders. We will do everything in our capacity to stage a memorable World Air Games,” he added.

Presenting his observations on the run-up to the WAG, Al Bastaki assured that everything is being done to ensure the success of the Games in December. “More than 170 countries have shown an interest in coverage of the event and we have been working in close league with Dubai Sports Channel and Abu Dhabi Sports,” Al Bastaki related.

On the sidelines, the Dubai panel also held informal discussions with FAI President John Grubbström and appraised him on the organization of the 2015 Dubai WAG.

The World Air Games is an international air sports event organized by Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) inspired by the Olympic Games and held every four years. So far, athletes from nearly 30 countries from across the world have confirmed their participation at the 2015 Dubai WAG.

Held under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman, Dubai Sports Council (DSC), the 2015 Dubai WAG will take place at Skydive Dubai from December 1-12. The FAI’s primary goal in organising the WAG is to showcase air sports to general public while promoting public participation.
