Abu Dhabi: Around 280 vehicles have been impounded while their owners face a Dh2,000 fine and 12 black points for violating traffic rules during the National Day holiday, the Abu Dhabi Police announced today (Tuesday).

The vehicles, which were seized from December 1 to 5 during National Day celebrations, have been confiscated for one month because of their motorists’ disruptive behaviour.

Reckless driving and drastic alterations to the vessels, in addition to stunts that endanger the lives of others, are all factors that could lead to vehicle impoundment, police officials revealed.

Brigadier Gaith Hassan Al Za’abi, Director-General of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, said that those who had their vehicles confiscated also violated rules on how to decorate cars.

In Sharjah, meanwhile, the Eastern Region Police Department of Sharjah Police seized vehicles flouting traffic rules in a campaign against reckless driving, said Colonel Ahmad Khamis Al Mutawa, acting director of Eastern Region Police.

As many as 41 vehicles were confiscated and 160 traffic offences were issued after a traffic campaign in Khor Fakkan and Kalba to prohibit motorists from disturbing the peace in the neighbourhood.

“They were organising illegal rallies and performing stunts on the roads and caused chaos and panic among other motorists,” Col Al Mutawa said.

Confiscated vehicles included cars whose engines [were modified] to make loud noises,” he said.
