Sharjah: Doctors removed a large 35-kg tumour from the ovary of a woman who thought she had gained weight because she was pregnant.

Dr Kawthar Mansour, gynaecologist at Al Qasimi Hospital, said the tumour was discovered after the woman complained of severe pain.

The doctor said this was the largest ovarian tumour she had seen in her career.

The 31-year-old woman came to the hospital with a huge abdomen, thinking that she was six months pregnant, the doctor told Gulf News. An ultrasound scan revealed the massive tumour. She was advised to undergo surgery to remove it, but she initially refused.

The surgery was done last Thursday and the tumour was removed and woman’s weight dropped from 103kg to 68kg.

The tumour weighed almost as much as 10 foetuses and had a significant impact on the woman’s life, the doctor said.

The doctor advised women to go for regular check-ups once they reach child-bearing age. Statistics show that a large percentage of women worldwide have ovarian cysts and that when not detected early, they could turn into cancerous tumours, the doctor said.

It is also advisable that women change their lifestyle and eat nutritious foods as the foods you eat play a role in determining the growth of cysts in ovaries and the rate of their growth, the doctor said.

The doctor said that once you start experiencing abdominal pain and other symptoms of ovarian cysts, opting for natural treatments early might be a healthy and risk-free way to be free from growths.

She, however, said natural methods have their limitations, especially when cysts grow as large as this one.

The Arab woman, who preferred not to be named, said she thought she was pregnant in the beginning, but when she felt severe abdomenal pain and felt uncomfortable, she went to the hospital for a check-up. “I was shocked to find it was an ovarian tumour,” she said.

“I was living in a nightmare,” she said, commenting on the pain and the huge weight she was carrying.
