Dubai: The Dubai Health Authority–run Rashid Hospital’s stroke unit is the only unit outside the European Union (EU) to be awarded an international accreditation for the establishment and functioning of the unit following European protocols in the treatment and management of strokes.

The incidence of stroke has gone up in the UAE with one person becoming a stroke victim every hour and, annually, over 7,000 patients suffering from it.

The only dedicated 24/7 stroke unit, that was established in early 2012, has been admitting on an average about 500 patients a year. Of these 150 required acute stroke management.

DHA plans to establish a completely dedicated neuro-spinal unit at the premises of the new Rashid Hospital complex, which is part of the DHA’s strategic plan.

Commenting on this honour, the DHA Director-General Eisa Al Maidour said: “We are very proud of Rashid Hospital for obtaining this accreditation and for functioning of a dedicated stroke unit that follows international protocols. It is the DHA’s aim to promote international accreditations in the medical field — both in the private and the public sector. This accreditation will help reaffirm the high standards of care that Dubai adheres to.”
