Dubai: In a rare laparoscopic surgery performed recently, surgeons at Burjeel Hospital, Abu Dhabi removed a biliary cyst from a three-year-old girl’s abdomen.

Choledochal cysts are congenital bile duct anomalies which result in sharp shooting colicky pain and jaundice in the child and require complete excision. The girl, Haseena Bibi, a Pakistani national was brought with complain of severe abdominal pain to the hospital.

Professor Dr Amin Al Gohary, Consultant Paediatric Surgery at Burjeel Hospital told Gulf News: ”It was very traumatic for the child, as well as for the parents who did not know how to help their child. She suffered from recurrent attacks of abdominal colic and was not responding to medical treatment offered by several doctors,”

Dr Al Gohary said the girl was diagnosed with the cyst after running several diagnostic tests including ultrasound and MRI.

Dr Al Gohary explained: “The biliary tree is a system of ducts that drain the liver of bile secretion into the duodenum — the first part of the small intestine. The swelling affected a part of the duct below the child’s gall bladder. “This is an extremely rare condition. It can become malignant and can endanger the life of the child if not treated promptly and with utmost care. We decided to conduct a laparoscopic removal of the cyst as against conventional surgery as this was minimally invasive and accelerate recovery.”

Dr Al Gohary added; “The smile on the little girl’s face is the reward we look forward to at the end of the day.”

Girl’s father Kamran Khan conveyed his gratitude to Burjeel Hospital, “To see our daughter playing and moving around happily now, after what she has gone through, is a gift. We will forever be grateful to Professor Dr Al Gohary and his team for giving our little bundle of joy a second chance at life.”
