Dubai: An Indian expat whose wife delivered through C-section at an Ajman hospital has alleged that their newborn baby died due to medical negligence. He said he has filed a complaint against the hospital with the Ministry of Health.

Sibu Jose, 38, said his baby girl Akalshiya died on December 5, 20 days after she battled in vain for her life. “We cannot believe how my wife’s healthy pregnancy ended in such a tragedy,” said Jose, adding that the baby was born seven years after their first child.

He said all was going well until November 11 when another hospital which his wife was consulting referred her to this hospital.

“My wife’s due date was November 18. However, the first hospital told us that she would most likely deliver within two days after a comprehensive check-up was carried out and everything was normal.”

Induced labour

He said his wife opened a file at the second hospital on the same day and underwent scans after which she was induced with labour. “The next day, she went to the hospital again with frequent contractions. After examination by a doctor at the obstetric emergency, they sent her home and asked her to come back once she got severe pain, adding that the dilation was only 2cm at the time,” he alleged.

He claimed that by November 16 his wife grew suspicious about her baby’s limited movement and rushed to the hospital emergency. He alleged that they had to wait for around two hours and repeatedly request the doctors to address their problem. “One doctor finally complied and upon finding the baby’s heart rate feeble, referred my wife for a CTG. The doctor asked her to show the result to the emergency since it was time for her to go home,” alleged Jose.

He claimed the scan confirmed his wife’s doubts. He alleged that after some delay, she was taken to the operation theatre. “By then the baby’s heartbeat had totally stopped. The baby was kept in the neo-natal ICU with multiple organ dysfunction due to hypoxia. She eventually died on December 5.”

Jose, whose hospital bills came up to Dh65,000, alleged that the hospital did not provide his wife and the baby immediate care which in turn led to the shocking tragedy.

An immediate response was not available from the hospital.
