Dubai: The Mohammad Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) welcomed the first batch of students for its six-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme at its campus in Dubai Health Care City (DHCC)

Addressing the inaugural class, Dr Raja Eisa Al Gurg, vice-chairperson of MBRU’s Board of Trustees, said that each of them has compassion, otherwise they would not have chosen to enter this life-saving, life-giving field.

“Each of you has big aspirations, otherwise you would not have wanted to earn your place at the forefront of health-care excellence. And, above all, each of you have the spirit of innovation, otherwise you would not have chosen the Mohammad Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences,” she added.

“MBRU is proud to welcome you, the inaugural cohort of medical students, as you begin your journey to become physicians and leaders,” she said.

MBRU, which has an academic partnership with Queen’s University Belfast, one of UK’s leading research-intensive universities, is accredited by UAE’s Ministry of Education — Higher Education Affairs.

Dr Amer Ahmad Sharif, CEO, Education Sector, Dubai Healthcare City Authority, said that the practice of medicine is transforming rapidly. Hence, he added, that it is all the more important that we focus on health-care advancements as well as the provision of patient-centred care. “To achieve this, MBRU’s programmes immerse students in the world of clinical care, help them understand the importance of teamwork and engage them in advanced medical education learning environments,” he said.

During their programme at MBRU, students will benefit from a student-centred medical education and state-of-the-art facilities, medical technologies and learning resources.

The students, selected from hundreds of candidates, underwent an exhaustive selection process before being enrolled in the programme including multiple mini interviews to assess their soft skills such as maturity; collaboration; communication; critical thinking; problem solving; ethical decision-making; empathy; and cultural sensitivity, among other non-cognitive skills.

Professor Alawi Al Shaikh Ali, Dean of the College of Medicine, said, “We have hand-picked our students to ensure that they have the right potential to become the future leaders of health care in the UAE and beyond. These students represent a diverse and exceptional group of people chosen from a highly competitive pool. Today our students have taken their first step into the transformative educational journey at MBRU which will equip them with the knowledge and skills to become committed, confident and capable health-care professionals in the future.”

The university aims to further enhance Dubai’s position as a recognised medical and health sciences education hub as well as contribute to the development of sustainable education by supporting the advancement of medicine and health sciences.
