Dubai: Baby Abigail’s case is particularly challenging for her parents Edna and Sandeep. Abigail, who was born on May 29 at the City Hospital with approximately 12 blockages in her intestines, has had four surgeries in the five months she has been on earth and her parents have run up a bill of over Dh1.3 million.

“Our final bill at City Hospital amounted to Dh1,302,716, of which we could pay Dh673,720. We still owe City Hospital Dh628,996, which I need to settle by January 2015. I have given the hospital post-dated cheques but have no idea how I am going to meet the expenses,” says the distraught mother who is fighting for her baby’s survival.

Strong and resilient, baby Abigail is being hailed as a miracle baby by Latifa Hospital staff where she underwent her last surgery on September 23, conducted by consultant paediatric surgeon Dr Mostafawi to help take in oral feeds.

“I have a special note of thanks for the entire staff at Latifa Hospital, who have literally mothered her to health,” says Edna, whose struggle for her baby’s survival continues. “Abigail now weighs 3.5kg although she should be beyond 4kg at five months. She is able to take in just 20 per cent of oral feeds and has to depend 80 per cent on intravenous feeds,” says Edna, who is shifting her baby to St John’s Hospital in Bengaluru, India, to establish 100 per cent oral feeding for her child under the expert gastro-intestinal care available there.

The prognosis from this hospital is very good and she would need another month of treatment to get her on to full oral feeds, Edna is hoping that generous-hearted UAE residents will help her meet her January deadline to pay the remainder of her bills.
