Sharjah: Sharjah’s census body will take part in an international statistics conference at Abu Dhabi from Tuesday, November 6.

At the three-day summit, the International Association for Official Statistics, the Sharjah Department of Statistics and Community Development will show how modern methodologies and practices help build strong communities.

Late last year, the department conducted a census of Sharjah’s population, with the aid of 1,800 researchers, observers and volunteers. Over several months, the team conducted door-to-door interviews across the emirate.

Key findings from the massive survey — Sharjah emirate has a population of around 1.4 million people — will be revealed at the conference.

Officials believe the census provided necessary data for decision makers, officials and investors to assess many economic, social and cultural aspects of the emirate.

“The conference will also provide a valuable opportunity to share expertise and knowledge on how to implement statistical processes and develop effective statistical services in the best possible manner,” said the department chairman, Shaikh Mohammad Bin Abdullah Al Thani. “We aspire to attract the best global practices that can be applied to build a more comprehensive and sustainable statistical system as part of our quest to not only stay abreast, but take a leading role in developing statistical work,” he added.
