Abu Dhabi: Buses transporting workers will be banned from using Abu Dhabi island’s roads from 6.30am to 9.30am to encourage the private sector to adopt flexible working hours.

The decision was approved on Saturday during a meeting of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council held under the chairmanship of Saeed Eid Al Gafli, Chairman of the Executive Office. The ban aims to ease traffic congestion on key roads and interchanges in the capital and improve road safety.

During the meeting, the committee also approved proposals to allott bus-only lanes and to upgrade 40 bus stations. It also cleared improvement of pedestrian crossings at a total cost of Dh30 million to encourage the use of public transport and enhance the effectiveness of mass transit.

The committee okayed a unified governmental platform for construction permits with an aim to save customers’ time and efforts. The move comes in line with the directives of the wise leadership to achieve further excellence and leadership in rendering its services. It is also in line with Abu Dhabi’s rapid urban and development progress.

Also approved were awarding internal road projects at a total cost of Dh104 million in Al Ain city.

The project includes implementing an internal road network, rainwater drainage and sewerage networks as well as potable water pipelines. The project also involves road lighting and service works in various areas in Al Ain.

The project aims to enhance the quality of the city’s infrastructure and to meet the growing needs of its residents as well as to provide them with suitable safety and security standards in line with Abu Dhabi’s objectives to ensure the provision of sustainable water, electricity and sewerage services.

The committee also endorsed a project to invest in constructing a boathouse in Al Sadr and Al Bahia areas as part of the government efforts to engage the private sector in the development of the emirate.

It also gave the nod to the maritime transport proposal for the following three tracks — Corniche beach, from Al Zahia to Al Reem island and from Al Zahia to Al Raha beach. The step aims to provide new transportation options as part of Abu Dhabi’s plan to develop sustainable marine transport.
