Dubai Global Village has launched a new creative community initiative called ‘Project Dirham’ that will engage with schools across the UAE.

To celebrate Global Village’s 20th season and also the UAE’s 44th National Day, Project Dirham will challenge students across the UAE to paint and embellish metal plates engraved with one of four national symbols that are inspired by the UAE Dirham coin. The symbols, which include the falcon, dhow, dallah [the Arabic coffee pot pictured on the one dirham coin] and oryx, will then be turned into unique works of art and placed inside a 3.2m x 10m art installation shaped like the ‘Dubai’ logo, which will be placed at Global Village on December 2 and will remain there until the end of the season. This will enable all guests to see the artwork.

Some 15,000 students from over 70 schools in Dubai will participate in Project Dirham giving a chance to every child to come up with his or her own original, artistic creation.

The finished plates will be judged by a local artist and the top three students will win Dh50,000, Dh30,000 and Dh20,000 respectively for their schools. All students who take part will receive a certificate of participation along with free entry passes.

Project Dirham followed on from the success of last year’s ‘Project Dallah’, which celebrated the 43rd UAE National Day and saw students creatively paint ceramic customised dallahs. Both campaigns are part of Global Village’s continued initiative of community involvement and development.

Global Village opened for its 20th season on November 3 and will be open until April 9, 2016.

The Global Village is Dubai’s leading family entertainment and cultural destination that provides a unique shopping experience at 32 pavilions, each representing a different country and culture. More than five million people are expected to visit this season.
