Abu Dhabi: Diplomats from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were put through an intensive two-day training course on how to respond to emergency and disaster situations.

The programme wrapped up on Monday and was a joint initiative between the Emirates Diplomatic Academy (EDA) and the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA).

“The training programme was aimed at introducing the diplomats from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the best practices in emergency response and disaster management,” said Mariam Al Mahmoud, Director of Executive Education at EDA.

“Organising the session underlines our commitment to collaborate with partners from the government, private, academic and international sectors to fulfil EDA’s mission to build capabilities that support the objectives of the UAE’s foreign policy,” she added.

Aref Rashid Salem Al Zaabi, Head of the Specialised Training Unit at the NCEMA, supervised the training sessions, with the courses focusing on a number of emergency and disaster scenarios, and how best to prepare and respond to them.

The diplomats were also given an overview of the work carried out by the Supreme Council for National Security, which the NCEMA works under, as well as the emergency management system that is already in place in the UAE and how the NCEMA works within that framework.

Established in 2014 by the UAE’s leadership, the EDA is aimed at educating and grooming the next generation of Emirati diplomats to help support the country’s foreign policy. The institution is also involved in setting up workshops and training courses with several different government departments to help raise the standards and efficiency of diplomats who are already posted in government positions.
