Dubai: Consumers will be able to confirm their purchase is halal by looking for a new Halal National Mark on the product recently shown for the first time.
The logo, showing a red crescent moon and the word “halal” in English and Arabic, was revealed by authorities earlier this week.
However, it was not immediately clear when the logo will start appearing on products.
It was launched as part of the UAE Scheme for Halal Products to be made mandatory as per a cabinet resolution issued earlier this year.
All products claiming to be halal, which means permissible for consumption in Islam, will have to carry the logo.
In the UAE, there is no unified national-level certification for halal products. Many meat products, for example, carry their own individual halal logos.
It is understood the UAE halal scheme is almost ready, but there has been no official word on its implementation date.
The Emirates Standardisation and Metrology Authority (Esma) is handling the scheme and will confirm which products qualify for the Halal National Mark. Dubai Municipality is also working with Esma regarding food producers in the UAE.
The municipality recently participated in the World Islamic Economic Forum in Dubai, which ends on Thursday.
