Dubai: Two men have been accused of breaking into a supermarket and stealing two charity boxes and five cigarette packets.

Prosecutors charged the two Tunisian suspects, I.B. and R.A., with using a crowbar to break into the supermarket and stealing the charity boxes that belonged to different charity organisations. The second suspect was also charged with consuming alcohol.

Both suspects admitted to the charges and requested a lenient verdict from presiding judge Fahed Rashid Al Shamsi at the criminal court on Sunday.

According to court records, the break in took place late at night on June 3, when the suspects broke the glass front door of the supermarket in Hor Al Anz and stole the items.

Based on a statement from a lieutenant, Dubai Police received a call at 5am from an eyewitness notifying them about the robbery, and when police reached the scene, the witness described what he saw and tried describing the suspects to help the police track them down.

On the same day, I.B. was arrested when police found him in the same area, and when he was brought to the scene where the crime happened, police found that his description matched the description given by the witness. I.B. confessed to the crime and told police that he had cooperated with R.A. and that R.A. had planned to rob the supermarket three days earlier. R.A. was later arrested and he also confessed to cooperating with the first suspect to rob the supermarket.

A verdict will be heard on September 24.
