DUBAI: Not sure about the validity of your Nol card? You can check it at any of the ticketing machines and counters at Metro stations and parking meters in Dubai.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) recently reminded public transport users that some gold, silver and blue Nol cards from the inaugural batch will expire on August 1, having completed five years since they were issued on August 1, 2009.

“There are three types of Nol cards - silver, gold and blue. The blue card is personalised and carries an expiry date next to the image on the card. The anonymous cards - as we call it - are the silver and gold ones which don’t have an expiry date on them. Users of these Nol cards can check for expiry at any of the ticketing counters and machines at Metro stations and parking meters of Dubai,” said Khaled Abdul Rahman Al Awadhi, Director of Automated Collection Systems Department, RTA.

Time to renew

“For example, when a person inserts his silver or gold card into the parking machine and if the card expires within 30 days it will show a message to apply for a new card,” Al Awadhi said.

He added that people will be able to use their cards even after they expire. “They can use it till all the credit finishes in the card. However, they will not be able to top up the card with new credit.”

The cost of a new silver and gold card remains Dh20 per card. This includes Dh14 credit balance on the Nol card. A blue card costs Dh70, including a Dh20 credit balance.

RTA said it is re-cycling its non-expired cards. “People sometimes keep four to five cards with them. Should they feel like discarding some of them, all they have to do is come to any of the ticketing counters at Metro stations and fill out a refund form. All the money in the card will be duly refunded to the card user. If the card is in good working condition, the card will be kept with RTA and re-cycled,” said Al Awadhi.
