Abu Dhabi: Families living in a residential building in Abu Dhabi are sweating it out as the air conditioner in their building has been malfunctioning for over a week now, residents told XPRESS.

“The rooms are hot and humid like sauna. It is impossible to live here in this summer,” Badal Abdul Rehman, a tenant said.

Rehman from Sudan said his six-day-old baby is wailing all night because of the heat.

“He won’t sleep at all. Two days ago I bought two electric fans to escape from the heat,” said Rehman who has four children. He has been staying in the three-bedroom apartment for two years. He pays Dh90,000 in rent.

According to residents, all the three chillers in the building have stopped working.

Last Friday, a group of furious residents called the police after the landlord refused to heed to their complaints.

Police complaint

“The police called the owner who promised to fix the problem. There was some maintenance going on Saturday. But the air conditioners are still not working,” said an Indian resident who did not want to be named.

The 16-storey building known as Crystal Towers on Hamdan Street next to the New York University has 48 families residing in it.

Many families complained of poor maintenance despite the high rents. “This building is in the heart of the city – reason why they are charging such huge rents. But the maintenance is really poor,” complained an Arab expat who has been living in the building since five years.

Residents said they are gathering signatures from all tenants to submit a memorandum to authorities to protest about the malfunctioning AC.

Memorandum

“I have also signed the memorandum which was written in Arabic. We have waited for more than a week and are at our wits’ end. Somebody has to take notice and solve this problem,” said another Indian resident.

The building owner was not available for comment.
