Dubai: Sudanese teenager Muttar Mohammad used the quality of patience he acquired as a camel shepherd to learn the Quran by heart.

The 19-year-old is a contestant in the Dubai International Holy Quran Award’s 18th edition. He began memorising the Quran when he was 13, and finished it in three years.

“Working for some time as a camel shepherd — like all my family members — made me patient and persistent. This was critical is helping me learn the Quran by heart,” Mohammad said.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Habib, 20, who represents Indonesia in the award, also said patience is indispensable to memorisation.

“Otherwise, you will not be able to [learn] the 6,236 verses in 114 chapters of the Quran,” Habib said.

Habib started learning the Quran when he was 10 years old and finished it three and a half years later. “I keep my little copy of the Quran with me wherever I go to revise. It’s actually a lifetime relationship.”
