Dubai: As the second phase of the Jumeirah Corniche rolls out this month, its new jogging track has become a runaway hit with residents and visitors.

The 14km corniche, which extends from the Dubai Marine Beach Resort all the way to the Burj Al Arab, runs alongside the Jumeirah Beach and is the longest of its kind in Dubai.

“It’s the best thing a fitness freak like me could ask for,” said Ian Smith, a British expat who has been running along the beach for many years. “The track is probably the best I have ever seen.”

Filipina Maria, another regular runner, said: “This is technology and nature at its best.”

For Indian housewife Sheela, nothing compares with the seaside breeze. “I live in Karama and jog around Zabeel Park. But now, I plan to come here every day. It’s worth the effort.”

Accessible from six residential districts with ample parking along the course, the five-metre-wide walk and jogging track, all of four metres, is one of the most eco-friendly projects in town. Besides unique landscaping, flooring and use of recyclable materials, the track also has smart poles which provide sustainable lighting.

Esam R. Al Mazroei of the Bahri & Mazroei Group, which has installed the lights, said the smart pole technology with multiple functions helps reduce power consumption and operational costs. “The multi-functional columns with LED system provides lighting with aesthetic coherence. It can provide light for long periods using less power and low maintenance. It is expected to enhance visitor experience and facilitate jogging activities in the evenings.”

As Dubai heads for cooler weather in the coming days, Maitha Bin Udai, CEO of RTA Traffic and Roads Agency, urged the public to make full use of the new facility: “Walking and jogging are a healthy practice and we invite enthusiasts to use the corniche.”

She said the corniche also offers shaded benches, retail kiosks and public and health amenities.

Susan Rogers of Umm Suqueim, said: “The track has given me another reason to live here.”

Indian businessman Ram Buxani, a resident of Jumeirah 1, said: “I go for a walk along the beach three to four times a week. The new track puts less pressure on the legs and feet. I cover around 5km every morning and it is easier to calibrate the distance now with the new indicators.”
