Dubai: An 11-year-old Pakistani boy living in Al Furjan Villa community in New Dubai is urging dog owners in the area to manage their pets better.

“I am not against dogs, but I just wish dog owners were more responsible while taking care of their pets. I have noticed that people let their dog out without a leash. It can scare others away. I often see dog poop around the park where kids play every day. It is not hygienic and is bad for the environment,” said Raed Ali, a Grade 7 student of Arab Unity School in Mirdif.

Raed has prepared flyers reminding residents about the importance of keeping the community clean and safe.

Summer vocation

“I love living in Al Furjan community and I thought I would spend my summer vacation constructively to raise awareness amongst residents to keep their environment safe and clean. Sometimes when dogs are without a leash, they sneak up to prams carrying babies. This can scare babies or young children who are not used to having pets in their house. When I tried telling some pet owners to leash their dog they simply turned around and said the dog was harmless and that it won’t bite. I love animals and respect people with dogs. But dog owners too on their part must respect us children and pay heed to our concerns,” he said.

Raed said he is also concerned about dog poop strewn in park and sand areas. “It is not hygienic for children to play around dog faeces. I hope pet owners carry plastic bags when they walk their dog, and pick up after them,” said Raed.

A Nakheel spokesperson said: “Violation of rules and regulations concerning pets is a challenge in most of the communities in Dubai. Rules and regulations regarding pets are set by the Dubai Municipality, which is responsible for enforcement and issuing fines for violation. Nakheel’s role is to raise awareness by regularly communicating the rules and contacting residents who violate them. We also encourage residents themselves to raise issues affecting the community, and fully support and appreciate this young man’s initiative.”
