Al Ain: Construction workers are being taught how to use electrical equipment properly after it was revealed accidents caused by their incorrect use are on the rise.

Insufficient knowledge, skills, and careless handling of electrical equipment are seen as the leading causes of accidents on building sites. Some 4,450 such accidents were recorded last year — showing a marked increase compared with the 3,574 cases registered in 2012.

To plug the gaps between common practices and official safety guidelines, Al Ain Municipality’s Department of Environment, Health and Safety initiated a campaign for staff and principal contractors to ensure full compliance with safety standards on building sites.

The municipality organised a series of workshops, focusing on basic elements such as risk management, training and efficiency. The campaign is part of the municipality’s overall efforts to improve safety on construction sites, said an Al Ain Municipality official on Tuesday.

The official said workshop participants were told about safety policies and asked to boost their efforts to ensure they comply with global standards.

He said there was a need to promote a safety culture among construction workers. This could be done through strict monitoring and raising awareness among workers and managers, he said.
