Abu Dhabi: A draft document dealing with nuclear safety regulation was made available today, with the document listing the safety requirements for the decommissioning of places where nuclear energy and radioactive materials have been used.

The draft document was made by the UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), an independent government body that is responsible for handling and regulating nuclear programmes in the UAE.

The drafted document, which is also available online on the FANR website for the general public to view, says, “The objective of this regulation is to establish the safety requirements for all aspects of planned facility’s decommissioning, from the setting and design of a facility to the termination of a licence. This regulation applies to holders of a construction or operating licence issued by the authority for a nuclear facility or other facility [hereafter a facility]. The requirements of this regulation shall be considered in conjunction with the requirements from other applicable regulations issued by the authority pursuant to the law.”

The regulations also require licensees to hire well trained and motivated staff that are able to properly handle the decommissioning process for the facilities.
