Dubai: A 20 per cent increase in energy savings was recorded on Saturday night by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) during Earth Hour 2015.

Between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Saturday, buildings, residents and tourist attractions across the city powered off in observance of the worldwide eco-friendly movement, Earth Hour 2015.

Dewa announced a 305MWh reduction in electricity use and 183 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission savings as the city marked Earth Hour for the eighth consecutive year. This is reportedly a 20 per cent increase when compared with last year, when Dewa recorded savings of 255MWh of electricity and 153 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Dewa hosted a public event for Earth Hour 2015 at Bay Avenue Park on Saturday. Dubai also set a new world record for the world’s largest LED-lit infinity mirror, which measured seven square metres. The achievement was recorded by the Guinness World Records. According to Dewa officials, “The infinity mirror communicates Dewa’s message that its efforts are infinite.”

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dewa, said: “Dubai was the first Arab city to participate in Earth Hour in 2008. Since then, Dewa has managed to make significant savings and support Dubai’s objectives to reduce the use of natural resources and achieve environmental sustainability. This has been aided by the cooperation of Dewa’s partners and greater social awareness. During Earth Hour over the last seven years, Dewa managed to reduce electricity use by 1,291MWh and saved 775 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.”
