Dubai: Environmental sustainability is one of the civic body’s key focuses over the next six years as it aims to explore ways that enhance its plans for urban planning, construction, and catering to the social needs of a growing population.

“Now is a crucial time for Dubai’s development, including the emirate’s landscaping and outdoor construction sectors. [Up until 2020], there will be a huge amount of growth in the region’s outdoor space and one of our main focuses is to ensure that this is achieved in a way that is sustainable,” said Eng Taleb Julfar, Director, Public Parks and Horticulture Department at Dubai Municipality.

As Dubai prepares to host Expo 2020, authorities from various government entities will be sharing their skills with international experts from the building and supply sector at the second Outdoor Design, Build and Supply Exhibition, being held at Dubai World Trade Centre from March 31-April 2.

More than 120 international and regional brands will be showcased at the exhibition — the only trade event of its kind in the region.

Julfar explained that in 2020, the city is expected to become a pedestrian-friendly one with various modes of transport, including Metro systems, a tram system and water taxis.

One of the highlights at this year’s exhibition will be the Urban Agenda 2020 conference. The two-day event will host speakers from Dubai Municipality as well as leading developers such as Emaar and Al Habtoor Group, with sustainable development topping the agenda.

“The city’s identity will always be rooted in its past heritage, yet moulded by the modern age. Dubai is currently in the process of rediscovering its identity, with the emphasis currently on rebuilding to local standards,” he said.

He pointed out that these standards need to be defined by their function rather than aesthetics, and then adapted to address local environmental issues.
