Abu Dhabi: Tadweer, the Centre of Waste Management-Abu Dhabi, believes in raising awareness on segregating waste at source before implementing compulsory laws to prompt residents to follow the practice.

Awareness is a critical component of effective waste management because it is important to educate people about the importance of recycling and the methods to do so properly, an official spokesperson of Tadweer told Gulf News.

“We also need to engage them in finding lasting solutions for the huge amounts of waste produced in the emirate. Effective waste management starts with individuals at home, who take waste segregation seriously. Therefore, we need to spread the message, and make people come forward voluntarily and get involved in our efforts to create a safe and sustainable environment for them,” the spokesperson explained.

Tadweer has organised a series of awareness campaigns to educate residents about the importance of waste segregation and disposal in the designated bins — green bins for recyclable waste and black ones for organic waste.

These campaigns were run in different sectors of Abu Dhabi with the participation of Tadweer staff and volunteers from voluntary organisations such as Mawalif and Takatof.

Tadweer also conducts an annual eco-awareness competition among school and college students in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. “This competition aims to nurture a generation that respects our environment and is aware of the dangers of environmental pollution,” the spokesperson said.

In addition, Tadweer also supports and takes part in clean-up drives organised by other organisations.
