Abu Dhabi: An estimated 9.4 million cubic metres of rainwater was collected in the north and central regions’ dams from March 23 to 27.

Suhail Mohammad Faraj Al Mazroui, Minister of Energy, said that the highest amount of rainwater, 8 million cubic metres, was collected in Al Beeh dam in Ras Al Khaimah. The dam was built in 1982.

The second highest harvest was recorded in Al Taween dam in Fujairah, with 800,000 cubic metres of rainwater collected.

Al Mazroui pointed out that the amount of water harvested by the dams is ‘very good’ when compared to the same period from 2016, during which 3 million cubic metres of rainwater was harvested. He noted that the UAE has 145 dams with a total capacity of 131 million cubic metres, and that the Ministry of Energy supervises 101 dams and barriers, contributing to enhancing, developing and improving water resources and preventing floods.

Al Mazroui hailed the unlimited support provided to the dams projects by the President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Initiatives Committee, which helps bolster the UAE’s infrastructure.
