Dubai: Ten turtles were released into the sea on Sunday to mark the start of the World Economic Forum.
Jumeirah Group, the Dubai-based luxury hotel company and a member of Dubai Holding, released the ten turtles at Madinat Jumeirah as part of the Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project. The group has been supporting the project for the past 10 years and has released 710 turtles to date.
A 70kg loggerhead and four young hawksbill turtles were released with satellite tags so they can be tracked and studied in the coming months. Two green turtles and three hawksbill turtles were also released.
“This event brings together leaders from across the globe to discuss issues that impact our world and introduce solutions for a better future. Therefore we are delighted to mark the occasion with a special release of ten turtles back into their natural habitat,” said Gerald Lawless, Jumeirah President and Group CEO, said.
French-American explorer, filmmaker and diver Celine Cousteau, grand-daughter of conservationist Jacques Cousteau, was also present at the event along with around 100 guests and forum delegates.
The public can participate in the monitoring of the turtles by logging on to the group’s official Facebook page.
