Sharjah: Two firefighters were injured while dousing a fire that was spreading between three deserted houses in Sharjah on Tuesday.

The Civil Defence operation room was alerted to smoke billowing out of the structures in Maysaloom area of Sharjah at around 1pm and firefighting units from civil defence fire stations responded immediately.

The two injured firefighters were admitted to Al Qasimi Hospital after a roof of one of the houses collapsed on them during the cooling operation.

The injuries were non-life threatening but they received bruises and injuries.

First Sergent Saud Khalifa was discharged from hospital at the end of the day after receiving necessary treatment, said fire officials.

First Sergeant Saeed Hassan Bayat Al Suwaidi was kept in hospital to ensure there was no internal bleeding or injuries, said Colonel Khalid Bin Kanoon, Director, Sharjah Civil Defence stations.

Colonel Bin Kanoon confirmed that the two firefighters from the Semnan Civil Defence Centre were injured in the fire when a roof collapsed on them.

From his hospital bed, Al Suwaidi said that he “was surprised when the roof fell on us and we tried to avoid it but we failed to do so”.

He said that in his 17 years of service with the Civil Defence he had never been injured or exposed to such an incident.

Meanwhile, Saeed Adnan, Al Suwaidi’s brother, said he wasn’t pleased with hospital management and staff and asked that they pay more attention when dealing with serious cases, especially work injured.

He said that his brother was admitted to hospital at 3pm and, according to him, his brother was not seen by a doctor at that time.

“After that, no one came and checked on his condition till 9pm,” he said.

Al Qasimi Hospital management said that they did follow the case from the beginning of the admission and examinations and necessary X-rays were carried out to make sure that his condition was stable.

The hospital management said Al Suwaidi received bruises and minor injuries and he was kept in the hospital to monitor his condition.
