Sharjah: A 33-year-old Afghan construction worker has died after falling from an under-construction building in Sharjah.

The incident took place on Sunday morning when he was working on a building in Moeilah area in Sharjah.

The engineers notified the police about the accident following which a probe was launched, a police spokesman said.

The body of the victim, who was not identified, was taken to Al Qasimi Hospital and then to the forensic laboratory for a post-mortem.

Police are urging engineers and construction workers to ensure all safety procedures are in place at their work sites in order to avoid similar accidents as lapses in safety regulations are a major offence and punishable by law.

Work-related accidents on construction sites are common in Sharjah. Though some cases are blamed on suicide bids, many are caused by safety lapses on these sites.

Meanwhile, An Asian worker was found hanging at his accommodation in Sharjah

The body was found at his accommodation in Industrial Area No 10 on Sunday, a Sharjah police official said.

The worker is believed to have committed suicide, the official said.

His Asian roommate told police they tried to lift the man’s body when they saw it around 12pm in an attempt to save his life. But their attempt was in vain as he was already dead.

He added that officials took fingerprints and other details from the scene to investigate the matter but so far do not suspect anyone else was involved in the incident.

Police have transferred the case to the Public Prosecution.
