Sharjah: A young Emirati was killed and his friend severely injured on Wednesday morning after their four-wheel-drive vehicle collided with a truck, Sharjah Police reported.

Police said the accident occurred due to speeding and overtaking from the wrong side, which caused the car to crash into a truck on Al Dhaid Road. The car was going at 180km/h, police said, and the driver was speeding on the one-way road when a truck changed lanes. The driver tried to overtake the truck from the wrong side and it resulted in a fatal collision.

The 21-year-old Emirati passenger was killed on the spot and the driver, 24, sustained serious injuries, police said.

The driver was transferred to the hospital for treatment.

Sharjah Police urged all members of the public, especially young drivers, to adhere to traffic regulations and understand their legal and social responsibilities.

Sharjah Police also appealed to parents to guide their children on proper driving habits, in order to prevent such incidents which put their lives and that of other road users at risk.
