Muscat: A one-year-old Omani child died and 23 other people sustained moderate to severe injuries in a horrific road accident in the UAE on Wednesday morning.

A total of 24 passengers were travelling in the bus, returning from Sharjah airport to Oman after a trip to Iran.

The bus overturned due to a sudden curve in Madeeq Street of Wadi Al Helo of Kalba around 6.50am, according to Sharjah Police. The bus caught fire.

Three Omanis are still in critical condition in Kalba Hospital, according to the Oman Embassy in Abu Dhabi.

These are two children who sustained fractures in their legs and arms and a woman who suffered burns on more than 35 per cent of her body.

The other injured passengers are in stable health in Kalba Hospital.

An official at the Omani Embassy told Gulf News that they are closely monitoring the situation and the body of the Omani child will be repatriated on Monday.

The deceased was the son of the bus driver, according to his relatives.

The passengers were holidaying in Iran and are from South Batinah governorate.

Most of them were children and women.
