Ras Al Khaimah: An Emirati man trekking the upper reaches of Ghaleila mountain was rescued by RAK Police Air Wing after suffering physical exhaustion due to intense heat, authorities say.

Lieutenant Colonel Saeed Rashid Al Yamahi, who heads the RAK Police Air Wing, said that his unit received a report from the operations room informing them of a man who had fallen in a rocky area near the top of Ghaleila mountain.

He said after the Air Wing received the report early Thursday morning, a fully-equipped helicopter with a number of rescue personnel took off on a search-and-rescue mission to Ghaleila mountain.

The climber was located at a height of 3,500 metres above sea level and was taken to safety.

Police officials said he was transported to Ras Al Khaimah city where he was given a medical check-up and mineral water and later hospitalised. He was found to be in poor health and suffering from heat stress, police said.

Al Yamahi said those who wish to climb mountains must exercise caution. He said the mountainous areas are very rugged and suggested that special coordination should be done beforehand with the authorities to ensure safety.
