Sharjah: Flames gutted a scrap warehouse in Sharjah industrial area late on Wednesday afternoon.

Workers escaped unhurt as the fire ripped through the warehouse in Industrial Area No. 10, said Brigadier Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Director-General of Sharjah Civil Defence, told Gulf News The fire destroyed sewerage pipes which covered with plastic( petroleum substances)  The fire is believed to have started at around 5.30 pm at one of the scrape warehouse.

Firefighters battled the flames and put it under control in a short time before spreading to the adjacent warehouses, the official said.

Firemen were dispatched to the scene as soon as the blaze was reported, to prevent widespread damage.

Firefighters from civil defence headquarters and three other stations participated in the operations.

Sharjah Police sealed off roads leading to the warehouse, allowing only emergency services such as firefighters and ambulances to pass.

Officials are investigating the cause the fire.

No injuries were reported in the blaze. Workers in nearby premises were also evacuated.

Residents reported a black plume of smoke rising from a building in the industrial district.
