Sharjah: A massive fire broke out at a power station near Sharjah Expo Centre on Sunday morning. No casualties were reported, however, the damage is estimated to be excessive as police are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.

Firefighters from Sharjah Civil Defence battled the flames for well over three hours in efforts to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, while police cordoned off the scene of the incident to aid the rescue team.

Brigadier Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Director-General of Sharjah Civil Defence Department, told Gulf News that the fire broke out in Munther power station in Al Taawun area at 9.30am.

Motorists reported seeing thick black plumes of smoke billowing from the power station, however, the cooling operation ended at around 1pm.

Al Buhairah police station has launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze, while the site has been handed over to forensic experts for further investigation.

Power distribution in the Taawun area was disrupted, causing a two-hour power cut in all buildings in the area. A technician on site said the power was rerouted two hours after the fire incident took place through other power sources.

An official from Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority told Gulf News that they are working on the site and the power will be back tomorrow.
