Dubai: More than 40 women students of the Higher Colleges of Technology sustained minor injuries after two buses they were in crashed on their way to Abu Dhabi, police confirmed.

All the students were treated at the scene of the accident, which took place on Shaikh Zayed Road before the Saih Shuaib area at around 10am.

Brigadier Omar Abdul Aziz Al Shamsi, Deputy Director of the Operations Department at Dubai Police, said the two buses had 84 students in total.

He said the accident happened when one of the two bus drivers stepped on the brakes to avoid a car that swerved from the extreme left lane to the extreme right lane to try to get into a petrol station.

The buses, which were behind each other in the right-most lane, crashed into each other, injuring the girls.

Brigadier Al Shamsi said that 34 of the students were taken to Rashid Hospital by an ambulance bus and eight to Al Baraha Hospital to ensure they were all right, adding that the on-call doctor from the Dubai Health Authority was monitoring the treatment process at the scene from the Control and Command room at Dubai Police’s Operations room.

The buses were severely damaged.

A spokesperson from the Higher Colleges of Technology, said the students were from the Dubai Women’s College and that they were all “well”.

The Deputy Director of Jebel Ali police station was at the scene of the accident, in addition to rescue and traffic patrols and ambulances.

A source from the Higher Colleges of Technology confirmed that some of their students who attend Dubai Women’s College suffered minor injuries as a result of the accident.

The source added that based on a health report from Rashid Hospital, the students injured are in good health and have been discharged from the hospital.
