Ajman: A 56-year-old Arab woman and her 27-year-old son were injured when their apartment ceiling collapsed on them while they were sleeping, Colonel Abdul Aziz Al Shamsi, Director of Ajman police stations, said.

The Palestinian mother, N.M., and her son, H.S., were sleeping in the bedroom in a flat on the second floor of a building in Al Nuaimiyah area of Ajman.

The son heard his mother screaming and he rushed to get her out after the ceiling began to crack.

“I woke up but the ceiling had already started to fall down. I covered my face with my hands to protect it,” the son told police.

The mother is still in hospital receiving treatment while her son suffered shoulder injuries and bruises to his body.

Col Al Shamsi said that they summoned the owner of the building and he said that they had carried out maintenance work in the building just a few days ago and the family had not mentioned that their apartment needed maintenance.

A team from the municipality will visit the building to examine it in order to ensure its suitability as residential housing.

A police investigation is ongoing.
