Dubai: As many as 22 pupils were treated for injuries after they inhaled a foul stench from their school’s air conditioning unit on Thursday morning.

Brigadier General Mohammad Abdullah Al Zaabi Director General of Ras Al Khaimah Civil, said that the initial emergency call reported a foul stench from one of the air conditioning units.

The incident affected over 800 pupils and staff who were attending the Al Riyada School for girls, located in Al Dhait area.

Out of the 22 injured pupils who were transferred to hospital, five lost consciousness and 17 others were in shock.

A team of firefighters and fire engines were dispatched to the school and immediately evacuated all 730 pupils and 70 staff members.

The evacuation plan, according to Brig Gen Al Zaabi, was carried out with the coordination of Ras Al Khaimah Police, the National Ambulance and various government departments.

The cause of the smell is under investigation, but Ras Al Khaimah Civil Defence suspect it was initiated by an electrical short circuit.
