Dubai: Four people, including a 16-year-old girl, were killed and 12 others injured in separate traffic accidents in Dubai during the past 48 hours, according to the Dubai Police.

In Saturday’s accident on Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road, a man who was driving at a high speed ran over group of people who were performing Magrib prayers on roadside, after the tyre of his vehicle burst, Dubai Police said.

The Asian driver, identified as GM, was driving a 4X4 vehicle and lost control of the vehicle, ramming into the group of people on the side of the road before the bridge towards Sharjah and killing two people.

Three of the six injured suffered serious injuries.

On Friday, a sudden, violent swerve made by a four-wheel-drive vehicle has claimed the life of 16-year-old girl, Dubai Police confirmed to Gulf News on Saturday.

This was the first known fatal accident on Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road in Dubai, following the reduction of the speed limit from 120kph to 110kph on October 15.

Police confirmed that the deadly accident took place in front of Silicon Oasis on the Sharjah-bound lane.

Traffic police said a Toyota Land Cruiser suddenly slipped at high speed to the right side of the road before it hit a concrete barrier — and flipped over.

Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of Traffic Department in Dubai Police, told Gulf News that the passenger died in the hospital and another suffered serious injuries — while three others suffered moderate injuries.

“The accident took place at 1pm, when the driver lost control of the wheel and hit the cement barrier. He claimed that he hit the cement barrier on the left side before losing control over the wheel and then slipped all the way to the cement barrier on the right side of the road. however, there were no signs of damage on the cement barrier on the left side,” Brigadier Al Mazroui said.

The 42-year-old driver and the passengers — all Jordanian nationals — were rushed to hospital, but the girl was pronounced dead on arrival.

Earlier on Saturday, a man was killed and another injured at 2am, when his vehicle crashed into the back of a truck on Ras Al Khor road.

In the afternoon, a motorbike driver suffered serious injuries on Umm Suqeim Road.

He was slowing down before a traffic signal when a car hit him from behind.

In another accident on Friday, an Asian truck driver escaped death on Jebel Ali road on the way to Al Maktoum International Airport roundabout when he lost control of the truck and the vehicle flipped over and caught fire.

The driver survived death when he managed to step out the truck before it went up in flames.

Dubai Police urged motorists to be careful when driving and follow speed limits.
