Sharjah: Police in Sharjah have confiscated unlicensed modified vehicles over the past week as part of a campaign to enforce traffic rules and protect lives.

As many as 22 vehicles were confiscated during a drive in Sharjah to prohibit motorists from disturbing the peace in residential areas.

The police received numerous complaints from residents about the inconvenience caused by some vehicles in residential areas, especially in the night.

Colonel Shawaf Mohammad Abdul Rahman, director-general of the Traffic and Patrols Department in the General Directorate of Sharjah Police, said the crackdown on noisy vehicles in residential area was part of a campaign to enforce traffic rules. The campaign aims to stop motorists from driving in a reckless manner and disturbing the peace of neighbourhoods,” he said.

“They were organising illegal rallies and performing stunts on the roads and caused chaos and panic among other motorists,” Col Abdul Rahman said.

Confiscated vehicles included cars whose engines [were modified] to make loud noises,” he said.

Col Abdul Rahman said that the campaign, which was launched earlier this year, focused on modified vehicles and groups who organise illegal rallies and racing during this time of the year.

The campaign will continue and cover all roads in the emirate of Sharjah, which recently witnessed a number of tragic accidents due to speeding, he said.

Col Abdul Rahman said that many police patrols have been deployed on roads known to be frequented by young people for street racing and other illegal practices involving modification of cars to increase speed.
