Sharjah: Two Emirati brothers, aged five and 10, died when their vehicle smashed into two trucks on the Sharjah-Umm Al Quwain road early Monday.
Major Abdul Rahman Khatr, director of Media and Public Relations Department at Sharjah Police, confirmed to Gulf News that there were six people — all members of the same family — travelling in the vehicle when it slammed into two trucks.
The police operations room received a call at 12.30am reporting the incident.
Two children were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Colonel Hassan Bin Surm, director-general of Umm Al Quwain Civil Defence, told Gulf News that they helped retrieve the victims from the badly mangled vehicle by cutting through metal using hydraulic equipment.
The four other family members including the father and his three sons were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.
One of the children was admitted to the intensive care unit and was reported to be in a critical condition at press time.
The accident took place near Umm Al Quwain bridge towards Sharjah.
The vehicle was driven by the father.
Police said investigation shows that the vehicle slammed into the rear of one truck then turned around and hit the other truck.
Police said the accident occurred due to speeding and that the motorist did not stay within his lane.
Emergency workers from both emirates rushed to the accident site to attend to the victims.
Funeral prayers for the two brothers were held on Tuesday at Al Ras mosque after Dhuhur payer and they were buried in Umm Al Quwain cemetery.
