Dubai: A dhow carrying 1,200 heads of cattle and 12 sailors heading to Dubai from India sank near Deira Palm Beach, the Crisis and Emergency Department at Dubai Municipality said on Thursday.

The department team launched a rescue operation and managed to get all 12 sailors to safety. However, the cattle did not survive, said Marwan Al Mohammad, Director of Public Health and Safety Management and head of the Crisis Emergency Department.

He said when the first emergency call was made by a sailor, the rescue team analysed the situation and took steps to minimise the losses. Al Mohammad said the rescue team managed to pull out more than 100 cattle from water, and removed over 800 dead cattle from the dhow.

Abdul Majeed Sefai, Director of Waste Management, said the team made all efforts to remove the dead cattle using equipment to prevent anymore damage.
