Dubai: Dubai Police launched a new safety campaign on Tuesday to raise awareness among truck drivers who were blamed for causing 62 serious accidents and 12 deaths on the roads so far this year.

Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of the police’s Traffic Department, said the campaign aims to reduce fatalities on the roads in coordination with Roads and Transport Authority, Dubai Municipality, Total oil and Thumbay Hospital.

“The main reasons behind accidents involving trucks in Dubai are drivers stopping the vehicles on the hard shoulder, not maintaining lane discipline and sudden swerving. Such behaviour causes serious accidents and more deaths on the roads and this must stop,” Brigadier Al Mazroui said.

In the first ten months of this year, 82 people were injured in accidents caused by truck drivers.

In 2016, death of 36 people and injuries to 151 others in Dubai were attributed to the faults of truck drivers in 99 accidents.

Dubai Police booked 29,266 traffic offences against truck drivers in the first ten months of this year.

“We have put up a tent in the fruit market in Al Aweer area to deliver awareness lectures and distribute flyers to truck drivers and make free tyre checks for lorries,” Brigadier Al Mazroui added.

Truck drivers have been urged to benefit from the educational campaign and follow traffic instructions.
