Sharjah: His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, in his capacity as president of the University of Sharjah (UoS), has unveiled plans to establish a centre of excellence for diabetes and endocrinology research, and a centre for nanomedicine at the UoS campus.
Dr Shaikh Sultan was addressing a graduation ceremony of the sixth batch of the Colleges of Health Sciences and Medicine and the seventh batch of the College of Pharmacy at the University City Hall on Tuesday.
“The launch of the centre for diabetes and endocrinology research is prompted by the high percentage of diabetes prevalence in the UAE and the region at large. The facility will advance diagnostic and therapeutic research at national and regional levels and open up new and broader prospects for scientific research partnerships that aim to improve public health,” Dr Shaikh Sultan said.
As for the nanomedicine research centre, Dr Shaikh Sultan said that its mission will be to conduct advanced applied nanomedicine research to find new treatments for cancer and diabetes.
Dr Shaikh Sultan was also awarded the honorary fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Present during the ceremony were Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, Abdul Rahman Mohammad Al Owais, Minister of Health, and other shaikhs and a number of UoS teaching and administrative staff.
