Abu Dhabi: A week after schools reopened, children in Abu Dhabi are still attending classes without uniforms.

Parents said there is an acute shortage of uniforms at school stores and retail shops across the city.

“My son is crying and does not want to go to school because he does not have the uniform trousers. The supplier does not have his size,” said Julien, a Canadian parent in Abu Dhabi.

The parent who refused to name the school said the uniform supplier had asked her to come back after two weeks when fresh stocks arrive.

Another parent said his two children, in grades 5 and 7 at an American school in Abu Dhabi are waiting for their sports gear for several days now. “They have two days of PE (physical education classes) in a week, and they still have not got the T-shirt and track pants,” said Ferdinand.

Some parents blamed tailors. “I am furious because my tailor has not finished stitching the uniforms as promised before the start of the year,” said Amina Rashid, a mother of three children attending a British school. “The school store had just the fabric which we had to buy and get stitched by a tailor,” she said.

Busy time

Tailors said it was the busiest time of the year for them and they are not able to cope with the demand. “The demand is more than we can handle. We are trying our best to deliver on time. But unfortunately, there has been some backlog,” said Ahmad Siddique, who runs a tailoring shop in the Tourist Club Area.
