Sharjah: The Sharjah Media Corporation, a government organisation, this week awarded nine student teams for creating the best visual media in the Emirate.

The award, called “Abdee” saw 600 students from Sharjah’s universities taking part in the competition.

Organised by the Sharjah Media Corporation, the best work was selected by an award jury made up of directors and deans of Sharjah universities.

The winners of the awards’ nine categories hail from the University of Sharjah and the American University of Sharjah.

A team of five students from University of Sharjah won first place in the category of Most Integrated Artwork — the grand prize — for a work titled ‘I Look Like Al Qasba.’

They received a cash prize of Dh50,000.

The aim of the award is to encourage creative media talent, develop media content and enhance the methods of visual reporting production.

The award has total cash prizes of Dh150,000 spanning nine categories. These categories included the Best Idea, Best Performance, Best Introduction, Best Videography and Best Direction.

Each category winner received a prize of Dh10,000, while the winner of the ‘Jury Award’ got a prize of Dh5,000.

Last month, the Organising Committee of the Abdee Award announced the shortlisting of 70 applications from 125 submissions for the best visual report by 600 students.

Addressing the students during the ceremony, Shaikh Sultan Bin Ahmad Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Media Council said: “The movement of our cultural development which is being witnessed by our country, starts with you.”

“You are the nation’s human capital and have a unique role to play,” Shaikh Sultan added. “Carry on with developing your talents and believe in yourselves, because change starts from within, and you have all the potential that qualifies you to be the best.”
