The opening ceremony of the Round Square Model United Nations Conference was held at The Shaikh Rashid Auditorium at The Indian High School (IHS) on Wednesday.

IHS is hosting more than 400 delegates from 21 schools across the world for the conference, which ends on Saturday. Schools from Armenia, Japan, India, Bangladesh, and Oman were among those participating.

The programme began with Dr Ashok Kumar, CEO of IHS, welcoming the guests. Special guests included Hind Al Mualla, chief of Creativity, Happiness and Innovation at ‎Knowledge and Human Development Authority; and Sumati Vasudev, Consul Education, Consulate General of India.

Round Square is a not-for-profit membership network of innovative schools in 50 countries across six continents.

DXBMUN is a student-run conference that aims at inculcating the UN ‘Core Values’ of “integrity, professionalism and respect for diversity”. The conference presents the youth with an opportunity to learn about diplomacy, international politics, research, public speaking and debating skills.

Student delegates will get an opportunity to debate and interact as part of various committees like General Assembly, DISEC, SPECPOL, Legal, UN Security Council, Cold War Cabinet, Future Crisis Committee, Joint Crisis Cabinet, Jaffna Peace Talks — 1987, and International Press Corps.

The highlight of the evening was an inspirational address by Arjuna Awardee Padmashree Deepa Malik, winner of the Silver Medal at the Paralympic Games, 2016, who received a standing ovation.

Kartik Goyal, Director-General, DXBMUN welcomed the delegates. All the committee leaders were presented the gavel by the special guests.
