Dubai: Roughly Dh69 million will be invested in the maintenance and upgrading of schools across the UAE in preparation for the new academic year, the Ministry of Education announced yesterday.

An additional Dh26 million will go towards projects at the Ministry of Education that include the facility management project.

Amal Al Koos, Assistant Undersecretary of Activities and School Environment at the ministry, said on Monday that 28 schools will receive extensive maintenance worth Dh33 million in preparation for the new academic year.

Amal said the Ministry of Public Works will complete the extensive maintenance by August 31 in time for the new academic year. The schools will include five schools in Dubai, six in Sharjah, four in Ajman, three in Umm Al Quwain, five in Fujairah and five in Ras Al Khaimah.

These 28 schools will also receive 3,374 AC units worth Dh10 million.

“We have been working with the Ministry of Public Works and other companies to prepare for the start of the new academic year. Among the most important work is installing the AC units. We have completed 60 per cent of the work needed and they will be ready in time for the new academic year,” she said.

Amal also announced that 59 schools will receive upgrades worth Dh18 million. This will include seven schools in Dubai, 15 in Sharjah, seven in Ajman, three in Umm Al Quwain, 15 in Fujairah and 12 in Ras Al Khaimah.

On the other hand, Dh8 million will go towards annual contract projects, which include urgent maintenance work.

“We are also collaborating with the Ministry of Public Works to work on bigger projects in the future to prepare schools for 2021. All the schools have to be modern and equipped with the infrastructure and technology needed to meet the 2021 vision.”

In addition to maintenance, 10 new schools will open in the new academic year.
