Abu Dhabi: More than 33,300 pupils across the UAE started their Grade 12 final exams on Sunday under the UAE Ministry of Education (MoE) curriculum.

These end-of-year exams will continue till June 7 for pupils in the Science stream, and until June 9 for those in the Literature stream. Results will be announced on June 16, the ministry had announced earlier.

Pupils in Grades 1 to 11 at ministry-curriculum schools will begin their final assessments on June 15.

In Abu Dhabi emirate alone, a total of 18,123 pupils in Grade 12 are sitting for their exams, the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec), the emirate’s education sector regulator, announced in a statement sent on Sunday. Of these, 14,733 are enrolled at public schools, and 3,390 at private schools.

Mohammad Al Daheri, executive director of school operations at Adec, on Sunday toured two public facilities in the capital to review examination arrangements, including the availability of invigilators, adequate air conditioning and lighting and the confidentiality of testing material.

“The Adec has noted that overall grades among Grade 12 pupils have profoundly improved this year. We are confident that our examinees will continue to make progress, and wish them the best of luck in their examinations,” Al Daheri said.

This year, assessments for Grade 12 pupils are taking place earlier than those for pupils in other grades at schools following the ministry’s curriculum so that high school graduates can find time to complete the admission procedures for universities or the UAE national service programme.

In addition to the Grade 12 pupils, 50,142 Abu Dhabi public school pupils in Grades 1 to 11 will also take their end-of-year tests soon. Following the exams, they will continue to attend classes till the end of the 2015-2016 school year on June 23.

Apart from the normal examination timetable, pupils who have their exams postponed due to exigent circumstances or who retake the assessments will do so between June 21 and June 27. Results will then be announced on June 30.
