Abu Dhabi: In an effort to a smooth reformation of the Grade 10 and 11 curriculum at public schools, education officials in the emirate of Abu Dhabi last week met 902 subject coordinators, the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) announced in a statement sent today (May 26).

According to the statement from the emirate’s education sector regulator, the meetings focused on the changes applicable for the curriculum and assessment practices, as well as developmental goals for each subject. Such discussions are necessary to facilitate the transfer to a modified curriculum for pupils in Grade 10 and 11 by the 2015-2016 academic year.

Before the meeting, school principals were asked to select 11 teachers from each school to be designated as school coordinators. These staff members would be trained to support other teachers based on the speciality subject, as well as provide feedback to the Adec about challenges faced. Ten different subjects were highlighted during the meetings — Arabic, Islamic Studies, Design Technology and Innovation, English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Geo Science, Physics and Integrated Social Studies.

“The upcoming reform will add emphasis on deeper learning, with students being encouraged to master concepts rather than simply remember facts. All subjects are therefore being modified to include explicit learning outcomes,” said Dr Najwa Al Hosani, manager of the curriculum division at Adec.
